COVID EIDL · the honest answer
Are EIDL loans forgivable?
It is the most-searched EIDL question, and the honest answer disappoints: there is no forgiveness, and there is no sign one is coming. But there are two real ways a balance shrinks — and a lot of scams built on pretending otherwise.
The blunt answer
COVID-19 EIDL loans are ordinary federal debt. They carry a fixed 3.75% rate (2.75% for nonprofits) over 30 years, and the law that created them never included forgiveness. The SBA has repeatedly confirmed there is no forgiveness program, and none is planned for 2026 or beyond.
Why so many people think it’s forgivable
Two honest sources of confusion. First, the PPP — the other big pandemic program — was forgivable, and the two blur together. Second, EIDL came with small grants: the Targeted EIDL Advance (up to $10,000) and the Supplemental Targeted Advance (up to $5,000). Those advances never had to be repaid — but they were separate from the loan. The loan itself always did.
What actually reduces the balance
Two things, both real, neither easy. An Offer in Compromise lets the SBA settle the debt for less than the full amount — generally only when the business has closed and cannot pay. A bankruptcy can discharge an EIDL like other unsecured debt (secured portions are more complex). Both are legitimate; both have real consequences. See our default guide for the fuller picture.
The scam tell
Because the honest answer is “no forgiveness,” an entire industry sells the opposite. If a company guarantees forgiveness, charges an upfront fee, or implies it is affiliated with the SBA, walk away — the SBA’s own hardship and settlement processes are free. We break down the red flags in EIDL forgiveness scams.
Where the portfolio stands
the recordThis is not a fringe problem: as of early 2026 roughly 1.3 million EIDL borrowers are in default and the SBA has charged off about $47 billion. In April 2026 it referred 562,000 loans worth $22.2 billion to the U.S. Treasury for collection. “Wait for forgiveness” is not a plan — the collection machinery is already moving.
Common questions
Are COVID EIDL loans forgivable?
No. A COVID EIDL is a direct SBA loan that must be repaid; it was never forgivable like the PPP. Only an Offer in Compromise or a bankruptcy discharge legitimately reduces the balance.
Will the SBA forgive EIDL loans in 2026?
There is no forgiveness program and none has been announced. The SBA is currently referring defaulted EIDL loans to the Treasury for collection, not forgiving them.
What about the EIDL advance I didn't repay?
The Targeted and Supplemental Targeted Advances were grants, up to $10,000 and $5,000, that never had to be repaid. They were separate from the loan, which still does.

The SBA’s own hardship and settlement processes are free: deal with the SBA directly through the MySBA Loan Portal or CESC@sba.gov, and talk to a licensed attorney before an Offer in Compromise or bankruptcy.
