Answer · from the federal loan record

What is the average SBA 7(a) loan amount?

The median SBA 7(a) loan funded in FY2022–2026 was $178,850. The average is much higher — about $508,000 — because a small number of multi-million-dollar loans pull the mean up. Half of all 7(a) loans fall between $55,000 and $500,000, and the median term is 10 years.

Why "average" is misleading here

The 7(a) program runs from small working-capital loans to $5 million acquisitions, so the average ($508,000) sits far above what a typical borrower actually gets. The median — $178,850 — is the honest "typical" number: half of all 7(a) loans are smaller than that, half larger. Whenever you see a single "average SBA loan" figure quoted near half a million dollars, it is the mean, and it is being dragged up by a handful of very large deals.

How big can a 7(a) loan be?

The 7(a) maximum is $5 million. Above that, borrowers typically turn to the 504 program for owner-occupied real estate and heavy equipment, which has its own limits. The median term is 10 years, though real-estate loans run to 25.

Source. SBA's 7(a) FOIA release as of 2026-06-30 — US-government public domain. 235,526 funded 7(a) loans approved FY2022–2026 with a gross approval amount. “Loan amount” is the gross approved 7(a) amount, not the SBA-guaranteed portion. Cancelled and never-disbursed approvals are excluded; leaving them in the denominator is the most common way these figures get published wrong.
