SBA loan credit score requirements

The SBA publishes no minimum credit score, which is technically true and practically misleading. There is a bar; it is just made of several things at once.

Short answer. There is no official SBA FICO minimum, but small 7(a) loans are pre-screened with a SBSS business credit score — roughly 155+ to pass, with most lenders wanting 165–170. Personal FICO in the above-680 range clears most overlays. Hard stops are unresolved federal debt (CAIVRS), recent bankruptcy, and current delinquencies.

The score that actually gets checked

For 7(a) loans up to $500,000, the SBA runs a SBSS score (a business-and-personal blend, 0–300). The SBA’s own pass line is low, but lenders set their own overlays — most want roughly 165–170. Above $500,000, files go to full manual underwriting where your personal credit history is read in detail rather than scored.

Personal FICO, in practice

There is no published FICO floor, but most lenders are comfortable at 680 and up, and many will still work with the 640–680 band if the rest of the file is strong. Below that, expect a harder search — our lender matcher shows who actually funds deals like yours.

The hard red lines

What offsets a thin score

Underwriters weigh the whole file: a strong debt-service coverage ratio, real equity injection, industry experience and collateral can carry a score that is a little light. A clean explanation of a one-off past problem goes further than most borrowers expect.

What approved borrowers look like

our data

Because the FOIA record only contains loans that were approved, it cannot show a rejection cutoff — but it does show that 93% of loans are approved under delegated authority, meaning the lender’s own credit box, not the SBA’s, is the real gate. Choosing a lender whose box fits you matters more than any single number.

Common questions

What credit score do you need for an SBA loan?

There is no official SBA minimum. Small 7(a) loans are screened with an SBSS score (most lenders want ~165+), and a personal FICO above 680 clears most lender overlays.

Can I get an SBA loan with a 600 credit score?

It is hard but not automatically disqualifying. A strong cash flow, equity injection and collateral can offset it — but you will need to find a lender whose overlay allows it.

What automatically disqualifies you?

Unresolved federal debt (flagged on CAIVRS), a current bankruptcy, and active delinquencies are the usual hard stops.

Rules described here follow SBA SOP 50 10 8 (effective June 1, 2025) and can change; lenders add their own overlays. This is education, not advice — confirm specifics with your lender. Figures cited as “our data” come from the SBA 7(a) & 504 FOIA record, released 2026-06-30.
